Everything You Need to Know Before Visiting The St. Louis Aquarium

After two long years of anticipation, St. Louis’ newest major attraction, the St Louis Aquarium at Union Station, opened on Christmas Day 2019. In its first week, the Aquarium saw more than 60,000 visitors through its gates. Undoubtedly the highlight of the recent Union Station renovations, the Aquarium is already pacing to become one of St. Louis’ most popular signature attractions. But before you visit, there are a few things you should know first:

Where is the Aquarium located?

The Aquarium is conveniently located in downtown St. Louis’ historic Union Station (201 S. 18th St.). The newly-renovated Union Station is home to several restaurants and attractions as well as a hotel. Many other hotels, attractions, and dining options are just a short walk or drive away.

How big is the Aquarium?
The Aquarium is two floors, 120,000 square feet, and home to tanks containing more than 1,000,000 gallons of water!

How many animals are at the Aquarium?

The Aquarium is home to more than 13,000 aquatic animals including upwards of 60 sharks and rays. The Aquarium sources its animals from other zoos and aquariums as well as rescue facilities and organizations that follow sustainable sourcing practices.

How much does it cost?

Adult tickets are $25 and children ages 3 through 12 are $18 (children under the age of three are admitted for free). The Aquarium offers a 20 percent discount for military, first responders, and senior citizens 65+. Annual passes are also available at the rate of $55 for one person, $100 for two people, $135 for three, and $160 for four.

Is my ticket good for any day and time?

Your general admission ticket will be marked with a date and time of your choice (times are available every 15 minutes). Adhering to this date and time will give you the shortest wait time. By redeeming your tickets on a different day and/or time, your admittance will be subject to availability and you may be waiting longer than you’d hoped. Tickets are valid for up to 90 days after the printed date.

How do I purchase tickets?

You can purchase tickets at the Aquarium website (stlouisaquarium.com/tickets).

Are there additional costs?

Within the aquarium itself, there are no additional fees unless you purchase food or souvenirs. There are additional costs for the ferris wheel, miniature golf course, and other nearby attractions. You’ll also need to pay for parking in the lots, though your Aquarium ticket will get you a $5 discount here.

How long does it take to go through?

Aquarium representatives recommend reserving between one and three hours to see the Aquarium depending on how quickly you move from exhibit to exhibit. However, there are many other things to see and do throughout Union Station and the surrounding area, so it’s best to keep a relatively open schedule during your visit so you’re not feeling rushed.

What are the hours of operation?

The Aquarium is open from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm Sunday through Thursday and 10:00 am to 9:00 pm on Fridays and Saturdays. And if you’re hungry, the 1894 Food Cafe is open every day during normal Aquarium operating hours. Aquarium hours may vary on holidays or during special events.

Can I bring food or drink in with me?

Outside food and drink are not permitted inside the Aquarium, though there are several concession options to choose from.
